Gloria Jean Moore Hayes was born on June 8, 1944 in Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky. Anna C. Hamilton and William Louis Moore were her parents. She married Robert P. Hayes on July 27, 1961. Six children were born to their union.
Gloria accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Leiper Street Baptist Church in Dixon, Kentucky. For thirty years she served in various positions at the church. She was instrumental in having the church recognized as a historical African-American church in the town of Dixon.
Gloria had a "can do" spirit. She always tried to make the world a better place and was willing to step in to get the job done. For example, when her husband who was the first black city commissioner in Dixon died, Gloria was appointed to fill out the remainder of his term. She spearheaded the effort of having the portion of Dixon Oak Grove Cemetery set aside for African Americans maintained in a like manner as the main portion. She managed to care for her family and obtain an Associate degree from Madisonville Community College in Business. Gloria was also an entrepreneur and owned her own business up until her death.
In 1992, Gloria relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. She became a member of Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church and attended faithfully for over 20 years. She sang in the Adult Mass Choir, the 8:00 am Choir, and the Women's Choir.
Gloria leaves to cherish her memory: daughters; Barbara Ann Hayes, Jacqueline Marie Suggs (David), Della Viola Dulin (Tony), Roberta Jean Jeffers (Darren), Bonita Kay Bogle, Stacy Lynn McGhee (Kionne). Sister Tina Johnson of Indianapolis, Indiana, brothers; James F. Johnson and Richard Johnson, Indianapolis Indiana. 10 grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
